TIA supports the direction announced by Government in June 2025 on the first tranche of decisions from the Milford Opportunities Project that has been examining the future direction for Milford Sound Piopiotahi since 2017.
This announcement provides much needed clarity around the direction for the Milford Sound Piopiotahi tourism experience and the regulatory and commercial functions that enable it to operate to a high standard. In particular, TIA supports:
- Clarity that Milford Aerodrome will remain open at this time and that cruise ships will continue to access the fjord. This provides certainty to these operators, enabling them to plan and invest for the future.
- Investment of $15.2 million to up-grade infrastructure and enhance conservation at Milford Sound Piopiotahi to sustainably grow and enhance tourism while protecting the local region and its important conservation.
These announcements will make a significant difference in developing Milford Sound Piopiotahi on a sustainable basis and operators will be better placed to consider the investments they can make, including in partnership with government for shared infrastructure and facilities.
Further decisions and announcements will be made by Government, particularly as wider reform of the conservation management system is advanced. Legislation on these conservation reforms is expected to be enacted in the current parliamentary term and will enable governance and management changes for Milford Sound Piopiotahi. Consultation on a possible international visitor access charge as recommended by the Milford Opportunities Project has been signaled.
TIA will actively participate in these processes, both the legislative reform and initiatives that are specific to Milford Sound Piopiotahi.
