Fast tracking job opportunities

A workplace programme led by AccorHotels is helping get  hundreds of Kiwis off the benefit, into jobs and filling the skills gap.

Since it started the programme with the Ministry of Social Development in 2009, 726  jobseekers have been employed by AccorHotels throughout New Zealand.

One of the most successful initiatives is Building Futures, a five-week pre-employment Fast Track programme. Following three weeks of classroom and on-the-job training, jobseekers attend work experience for a fortnight. Once they’ve successfully completed the programme, they are offered permanent hotel jobs. Graduates also have the opportunity to complete a Level 3 ServiceIQ qualification.

Rotorua’s Novotel and Ibis General Manager Edward Judd is a strong supporter of the programme.

“Fast Track has been vital to help reduce our reliance on employing staff with visas, enabling us to support locals. We’re delighted to continue to train staff who work and live nearby.”

In July the programme was expanded and trialled in the Bay of Plenty as the ‘Tourism Industry Aotearoa and AccorHotels/MSD pilot programme’.

Within the trial, AccorHotels provides training and together with five other hotels provides employment. The other hotels joining the trial are Millennium Rotorua, Rydges Rotorua, Regent of Rotorua, Wairoa Spa and Sudima Rotorua.

Nathan Maynard, Hotel Manager of Regent of Rotorua says he is very impressed with the candidates put forward by MSD, the way they presented themselves and their engagement.

“They asked good questions and those I met seemed genuinely interested and keen for an opportunity.”

Thirty MSD clients began training in late July and will complete the course in late August.
