The thoughts of all of us at TIA are with our members in this extremely challenging time. TIA is operating in full crisis mode as we support you and the wider industry through this unprecedented event. Our latest actions are below.
The COVID-19 Tourism Advisory Group (C19-TAG) was formed at TIA's suggestion to bring together the tourism private sector and government officials.
The group will provide a regular flow of advice and information on the state of the tourism industry to the highest levels of Government.
Government agencies represented on C19-TAG include the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment, Tourism New Zealand, Immigration New Zealand, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade, Ministry of Transport and the Department of Prime Minister & Cabinet.
In addition to TIA, tourism organisations include Tourism Export Council, Regional Tourism New Zealand, and Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington Airports.
TIA Chief Executive Chris Roberts is a member of the C19-TAG sub-group working on recovery plans. The TIA Board has also formed a COVID-19 sub-committee.
TIA has established a COVID-19 Tourism Panel to assist in informing and advising the industry response to the outbreak. The Panel, consisting of senior industry executives from tourism businesses and sector associations, will meet fortnightly.

TIA’s many conversations with industry are providing a good sense of the challenges faced and the actions of industry in response. We have added to these understandings by running an industry-wide survey to provide a sound quantitative understanding of where the industry is placed and what it is doing. The responses to the survey will strengthen our ability to respond, and to advocate for the best actions by Government.
In partnership with Horwath HTL, TIA has undertaken a New Zealand Hotel Market Sentiment Survey to examine how the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting hoteliers’ outlook for the New Zealand hotel market in general and their hotel in particular. 115 hoteliers responded to the survey which was carried out between 30 April and 5 May 2020.
TIA is hosting a series of webinars to help support the industry through COVID-19 issues. We would really value your input into the content of upcoming sessions as we develop ways to offer practical help.

Having data to track industry progress is always important, but the traditional data sets have not proven useful in this rapidly changing COVID-19 period. We have been working with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment to bring forward more current data and forward indicator information. We will be interpreting this body of data to paint a picture of the most recent state of the industry and its near-term outlook.
TIA is speaking to the media multiple times a day to express the needs and concerns of the industry.
We are keen to help our tourism people keep in touch with the industry, even while they are not working over the next few weeks. To do this we are collecting personal email addresses of those who wish to receive T-Mail and other TIA communications, even if they have to temporarily or permanently leave their current tourism place of employment.
