The Draft Government Tourism Strategy
Submission to the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment - 4 Feb 2019
TIA welcomes the draft Government Tourism Strategy. We strongly support the ‘tourism system’ approach used in the strategy and we share this way of looking at the visitor economy. This allows us to draw in the wide range of parties with a role to play in how tourism operates for the benefit of New Zealand. We support the Government’s aim ‘to enrich New Zealand through sustainable tourism growth’. The five themes are sensible and largely mirror the structural elements of Tourism 2025.

Consultation on proposed processes for maintaining the approved subjects list for University Entrance
Submission to the New Zealand Qualifications Authority - 18 Oct 2017
The tourism industry needs a workforce that supplies the right people with the right skills at the right time and place. Having tourism as an approved UE subject would be an important enabler of this. We are concerned that tourism is not currently an approved UE subject as it adds to the myth that a career in tourism is not an attractive option.

There is a lack of information on the impact of the proposed changes to the tourism industry. No information is provided on the functions of the proposed customer sector teams, the structure of each team and the number of staff. Therefore, TIA is unable to provide full support for this model due to a lack of information.

University Entrance Review 2016-2017
Feedback on the Discussion Document - 28 April 2017
TIA highlighted the need for tourism to be a UE-approved subject. We stressed our surprise to see an overall lack of engagement with industry sectors on this review work. Many industries, including tourism, value UE qualified graduates. It seems an opportunity to strengthen engagement with industry has been lost and it reflects poorly on NZQA’s stakeholder engagement processes.

Overall, TIA supports the draft paper and its series of bold recommendations. Land Transport Amendment Bill 2016
Submission to the Transport and Industrial Relations Select Committee - 27 October 2016
Safety of visitors and drivers is critical to this discussion. We support the continued requirement for all drivers of small vehicle passenger services to obtain a P-endorsement on their licence. We are concerned that drivers of small vehicle passenger services do not require knowledge of the English language.

New Models of Tertiary Education
Submission to the Productivity Commission's Issues Paper - 4 May 2016
The strength of the voice of the employer within the current tertiary system needs to be a lot stronger than it currently is. We are concerned that the Issues Paper does not go far enough in recognising this as a significant issue.

Shop Trading Hours Amendment Bill
Submission to the Commerce Commission - 21 January 2016
TIA supports the liberalisation of Easter trading laws but would prefer to see a national law to provide consistency for travellers, rather than allowing 67 councils to make 67 bylaws.

This was a win for TIA, with the new Shop Trading Hours Bill passed into law on 25 August 2016. However, we would have preferred a national rule, rather than leaving it up to councils to decide when and where shops will open.
